Coaching WAVL (Seniors)

WAVL is a highly competitive league featuring multiple men’s and women’s divisions. Coaches at this level must have prior volleyball experience/knowledge. Northern Stars does not run traditional one-day trials like other clubs. Instead, coaches are expected to be involved during off-season and pre-season squad trainings, where they can:

  • Evaluate players across multiple sessions

  • Provide feedback and guidance early

  • Select their team based on consistent performance and attitude

Coaches are expected to:

  • Attend and coach during pre-season and in-season training

  • Coach their team on game day

  • Work with our Coaching Coordinator on planning for the season

Program Structure for WAVL

  • In-Season (April–September)Focus on team cohesion, performance, and game systems. Coaches work on executing strategy collectively. Players still improve individually, but progress may be slower due to weekly games and match-focused training.

  •

  • Off-Season (October–December)Focus on individual development. This is where players make the biggest technical and athletic improvements. Without weekly matches, coaches build player capabilities and introduce new skills and habits.

  •

  • Pre-Season (January–March)Focus on integration into team systems. Coaches prepare players to perform within the club’s structures, allowing smooth movement between divisions and building full team performance.

Player-Coaches

Most senior coaches also play WAVL. The club reimburses them by covering their playing season.Non-playing coaches: Receive a coaching payment (lump sum).

We’re always looking for coaches who are:

  • Passionate about player growth and development

  • Inclusive and supportive in their approach

  • Strong leaders who value teamwork, communication and improvement

Coaching at Northern Stars means being part of a supportive team, working alongside our Coaching Coordinator, Preston, to develop players, plan training blocks and grow our club community. You’ll receive guidance from our Coaching Coordinator and support throughout the season.
